Maer Bari

Nikunja Residence Vernacular Reinterpretation Uthan Typology Golden Ratio Climatic Design

Mother's house. Maer Bari is a multi-storey family residence in Nikunja, Dhaka: a site shaped by the airport's approach corridor, summer and winter breezes, neighbouring residential grain, and views that needed both capturing and filtering.

The design draws from the traditional Bangladeshi village home, where formal, private, service, and informal spaces are arranged around a central uthan (courtyard). That spatial logic, hierarchical yet permeable, communal yet protected, is reinterpreted for a dense urban plot. The Golden Ratio structures the proportional relationships between rooms, openings, and the courtyard itself.

Concrete block walls left exposed, timber-framed pitched roofs, jali screens, and deep verandahs give the house its material identity: robust, ventilated, and rooted in the construction culture of the region.
